Fred is a man who wanted to follow Jesus, no matter where it took him. He was never called to go overseas, and he never started a huge ministry or planted a church. But he didn’t think he needed to do any of that. He believed God would speak to him to direct him. And that’s just what God did!
One day, Fred was in a car accident. Everything turned out to be okay, but his wife looked at him and said, “I think this is the Lord’s way of telling you to get this old truck replaced! He agreed, and soon found himself in the next town over, having found a deal online for a new truck. It was a Saturday evening, so he booked a motel for the evening and decided to find a church to visit the next day before driving home.
But when he visited this church, he knew this was the real reason God brought him to a different town. The entire service was all about discipleship, something he knew God was putting on his heart. The speaker shared about movements of disciples who make other disciples in Africa. Fred decided he needed to know more. He approached the speaker after the service, thanked him for his message, and found out that the speaker was involved with an organization that encourages disciple making in the nations.
Fred wanted to be more involved, but he didn’t know how, exactly. On the one hand, he knew God was calling him to this ministry, no matter the cost. But on the other, he didn’t really sense God leading him to move to Africa. He decided to sign up for disciple making training anyway. If anything, it could at least help him understand more. He loved the practical wisdom and hands-on tools the training provided him. He really felt he could actually make disciples using these methods.
During the training, he was also introduced to the Waha app, a practical tool that made it easy for anyone to make disciples, even if they didn’t have any training. It removed all the barriers to learning from God’s Word and helped seekers grow in simple, approachable ways. It gave Fred an idea…
“Why don’t I just start making disciples right here in my back yard?”
After all, there was nothing special about disciple making. It was all simple, Biblical principles, applied in tangible ways that encouraged reproduction. It could work anywhere in the world. He thought about where he could make good use of Waha, and almost immediately a local ministry to the homeless came to mind.
He started volunteering and soon found himself teaching a devotional course as part of the ministry’s programming. They told him he could use any curriculum he wanted as long as it was based on the Bible, so he decided to go through the lessons in Waha with the people.
Fred found that, even though the people in his class had little experience with church, they responded eagerly. He saw many of their lives change, and some went from timid to bold. Not only did they begin to understand who Jesus is and how to follow Him, but they started to proclaim Him themselves!
Fred was so pleased to see God working among the people, but he was even more pleased to see that God could use anyone, anywhere, including a man who didn’t feel he could move to Africa, but did feel he could say a simple “yes” to Jesus, right where he is at, in life.
